Diet Foods That Can Make You Obese
“Fat-free” appeared on all types of foods, and consumers (not surprisingly) assumed that fat-free meant calorie-free. You need to come armed with some savvy to weed through the hype. Some health experts link the “at-free” craze to the explosion of obesity in the U.S., and definitely people are unclear about what’s best, fat-free, carb-free, high protein, etc. Bottom line: You must read the top line on the nutrition details panel.
Here’s the skinny on some “diet” foods you’d think would support your diet plan:
Bran Muffins. Whether it is plain bran or combined with apples or bananas, the fiber fills you up, sure, but considering all the sugar and butter it delivers, a bran muffin is actually just a round slice of cake. One weighs in at approximately 20 grams of fat, 420 calories, and 34 grams of sugar.
Reduced-Fat Cookies: Three of these provides you with 150 calories. But get this: Three regular chocolate-chip cookies are 160 – just 10 measly calories more.
Sushi Rolls. The vegetables and seaweed wrap are low-cal, but a lot of the most popular rolls are slathered with cream cheese or mayo (e.g., in that spicy sauce that comes on many choices), and the seafood inside could be tempura-battered. Thanks to those ingredients, a standard roll can clock in at 500 to 600 calories.
Juice: You’ve seen the ads: “100% pure juice with live enzymes and filled with minerals and vitamins.” Juice isn’t a diet food unless you’re on a weight gain diet. Juice is extracted from the whole fruit; the beneficial fiber is left behind.
Dried Fruit. Cup for cup, dried fruit has 5 to 8 times more calories than the fresh kind as it has been dehydrated and is much more dense. Fresh grapes, for example, have 60 calories per cup, while raisins have 460.
Bottled Teas. Most store-bought brands are souped up with sugar or honey, which are crazy-caloric sweeteners. Oh, and one bottle can contain two or more servings, bringing the calorie count to almost 200 – similar to a bottle of soda. Stay away from this, even if you have tummy tuck Cardiff or you are planning to get one. Of course, after that type of process, you still need to maintain your body because if not, you are going to acquire weight like never before.
Rice Cakes. These light snacks are fat-free and low in calories, but they’re also completely lacking in fiber or protein – ingredients that professionals say actually curb food cravings. And limit the flavored kinds -they don’t satisfy you more and they tend to have lots of sugar or sodium.
Cereals: Eating breakfast is among the lifestyle habits that predict weight-loss and maintaining that desired weight. Cereals labeled “smart” or “wholegrain” or “fruit” are not necessarily smart for your waistline or your health. Cereals contain a bit of wholegrain, but there’s no limit on the other elements, including sugar. The first ingredient should be wholegrain: whole wheat, whole oats, rye or other. See the nutrition details panel and take note of the serving size.
Calories do count. Read the quantity of servings in the package or container, and then read calories per serving. When you know what you’re consuming, it all accumulates.
