Living With A Stutter Discussed In Very Basic Terms
Dad I really need your help – this speech impediment is killing me – I am having a really tough time at the moment. At school today I was asked to read a passage from a reading book in front of the entire class and I made such a fool of myself. Talk about stuttering badly – it was a complete nightmare. Please would you try and find me some specialist stuttering treatment?
The above is a part of a conversation that I had with my father when I was aged just fourteen. My speech was totally out of control, as you could no doubt tell, I was in desperate need of some specialist help. My father was fully supportive of me and stated that he would do his very best to locate a top class therapist.
In the end I had to wait a further eight years before I finally managed to stop stuttering – having to endure another eight years of this most distressing speech impediment was far from ideal of course but the quality of the speech and language therapy at the time was extremely poor.
Stuttering or stammering, as some people call it, affects one percent of the UK population. I guess to many people one in every one hundred might not seem a lot – but believe me in reality it is.
Life as a fluent person is every much as amazing as I thought it would be. I really appreciate the fluency, as I am sure you could imagine.
If you are a person that has a stammer/stutter then I hope that you gain inspiration from this article and my story. If I can overcome the speech impediment then I am sure you can as well. Life does not have to be that difficult – with a bit of hard work and plenty of belief you could soon be on your way to a life of fluency.
