Humor Works for the Mind For Both Young & Old.
Humor has an important part in our life and has a healthy benefit on a person’s personal interactions, reactions to stress and disease fighting capabilities. Doctors conclude that finding out the brain’s literal reaction to humor can provide clues into novel therapies to assist curing a depressed person. The parts of the brain that are active during humor have been discovered to operate irregularly in human beings with severe depression.
Scientists have seen that the brain’s “funny area” is pinpointed at the right half of the frontal lobe directly above the right side eye. The same piece of the brain is also associated with communication reactions and emotions. The brain also displays involvement in the nucleus accumbens, which is the reward center of our brain.
Humor also has an effect on the immune defenses. Studies into this field has found that laughing results in alterations in the nervous systems and changes the level of stress related hormones and certain other chemicals. A study where people watched 60 minutes of a show with the comedian “Gallagher” had reductions in quantities of catecholamine and cortisol, both stress related hormones.
Humor is particularly useful when humans joke with themselves, in interactions that raise morale, minimize tension or express differences in opinion. We feel that comedic presenters as most informative and comedic acquaintances as superior. Research suggests that simple presentations typically operate against the brain, while humor loosens the brain to learn more effectively. Merely because humor forces additional processes and areas of the brain, it can also assist a person to learn more pieces of information.
A somewhat recent research project into the aging process of the brain has judged ability in suggesting the right punch line for a joke. Judged against college aged adults, the older people were less accurate choosing the right answer. The older people typically went for the simple but unfunny options. Important to note is that all the older individuals had already passed a intellectual quiz. Scientists determined that aging may have somewhat affected the areas of their brain that are activated in humor interaction.
Humor may be the best remedy for any illness, because attitude of the person could in the end be the cause of the illness to begin with. So it’s logical that a modification in attitude – to a happy beingness may lead to better state of mental and physical health.
